What Is Bakuchiol?

Bakuchiol is a botanical extract derived from the Psoralea corylifolia plant, native to India. Traditionally used in Ayurvedic and Chinese medicine for its anti-inflammatory properties, bakuchiol has gained attention as a skincare ingredient. The key question is: Is bakuchiol as effective as retinol?

In a double-blind, placebo-controlled study, bakuchiol was shown to reduce signs of aging, including fine lines, wrinkles, and hyperpigmentation. The results were comparable to retinol but without the associated flaking or irritation. Additionally, bakuchiol stimulates collagen production and aids in cellular turnover, making it a promising and more tolerable alternative to retinol. However, bakuchiol works more slowly, so users should expect gradual results compared to the faster effects of retinol.
